Saturday’s match sponsor against Waltham Abbey is Stour Valley Community School (SVCS) in Clare and AFC thank them for their generous sponsorship.
SVCS is one of two schools in the Stour Valley Educational Trust, the other being Clare Community Primary School. SVCS opened in September 2011 on the site of Clare Middle School as part of the first cohort nationally of 24 Free Schools.
When it opened it had 170 students. Current student numbers are 579 and an increase to a maximum of 600 is being contemplated. Since 2013 SVCS has been oversubscribed for the 115 available places and 2018 is unlikely to be an exception.
A substantial proportion of students come from the school’s western catchment which includes Glemsford, Long Melford and Sudbury.
Two Ofsted Inspections in 2013 and 2017 have rated it to be a Good school. GCSE results since 2013 have improved steadily. In 2017, Grade 4+ English and Maths was 66 per cent compared with a national average of 63.3 per cent, making it the third best performing school in West Suffolk.
Central to the school’s vision is the belief in the uniqueness of every student and that every young person has gifts to discover and share with others. The school believes that this vision is best achieved within a school purposefully designed to be of relatively modest size.
Parental satisfaction is high and student behaviour very good. Such positive factors are reflected in the exceptionally low turnover of staff. SVCS is committed to building brighter futures for its students, the local community and the wider world.
The school provides a stimulating curriculum with an emphasis on Maths, English and Science but maintains a timetable that positively includes participation in the arts and sports. Inter-house and inter-school sport are highly valued and SVCS students perform well, frequently winning competitions within West Suffolk and a substantial number of students represent Suffolk and East of England teams.
SVCS is delighted that one of its alumni (2015), Sam Mills, has made his presence felt in the AFC Sudbury first team the current season.
