Dereham Sign Ex Norwich Man From Wivenhoe

COOTE COUP FOR DEREHAM

Dereham Town have pulled off a coup by signing former Norwich City striker Adrian Coote.

The 26-year-old front man should have made his debut for the Magpies in Tuesday night's League Cup tie at Gorleston, but fog at Emerald Park caused its postponement.

Dereham swooped after Coote had been formally released by Southern League Division One East outfit Wivenhoe Town, where he had been playing after dropping out of the professional game.

"We're absolutely delighted to have Adrian playing for us," said Dereham manager Simon Barnes. "It has got to be one of the biggest signings in the club's history - he's a Northern Ireland international and he's still only 26. Things haven't really worked out for him recently, but he's still got a tremendous amount to offer. A lot of players of his age are dropping out of league football now because the money just isn't there.

"He's a great lad and as soon as I spoke to him about playing for Dereham he was keen to join us. Adrian has moved to Mattishall to live and we just got talking after we met at a veterans' match. Money was never mentioned. He just wanted to play football."

Yarmouth-born Coote came up through the ranks at Carrow Road, signing professional forms in 1996.

He scored plenty of goals for the Canaries at reserve and youth-team level, but struggled to make an impact in the first team, managing just three in 60 appearances, only 21 of which were starts.

Coote was eventually sold to Colchester, with the Essex side paying a club record £50,000 for his services, but the move wasn't a success. He failed to win a regular place at Layer Road and, after a brief spell on loan at Bristol Rovers, was released in October 2003.
