The Action

Today’s match saw Sudbury and Bungay compete in the first round of the Norfolk and Suffolk Women’s Cup. The fixture is a repeat of last years first round tie in which Sudbury came out 8-0 winners.

The opening 20 minutes of the match saw little to separate the two teams with neither team having many attempts on goal. It was Bungay who made the breakthrough when Sudbury failed to deal with a ball sent into the box. Despite going behind for the second game running, Sudbury soon responded with a goal of their own. Chloe Mills played the ball into the feet of Emma Holloway on the edge of the box who composed herself well to level the score at 1 – 1.  Sudbury was to end the half on top after they took the lead from a cross in from Natalie Golding eventually headed in by Chloe Mills. Half time AFC Sudbury 2 – 1 Bungay Town.

With the second half underway Sudbury looked to extend their lead. Sudbury did not have to wait long for their goal as Charlotte Churchman was able to round the Bungay defenders into the box to net Sudbury’s third. Bungay were soon able to pull a goal back to keep the tie alive. The goal came courtesy of a free kick on the outside of the box which sailed into the goal over the Sudbury keeper.  Sudbury finally took hold of the game and Emma Holloway scored twice more to net her hat-trick and take Sudbury’s lead to 5-2. Holloway then provided a neat ball across to Natalie Golding on the right who dispatched the ball past the Bungay keeper and into the net for Sudbury’s 6th.  With 15 minutes left on the clock Sudbury found time to score again when Emma Squirrell was sent through on goal to slot the ball under the keeper and bring Sudbury’s total to 7. Bungay were however able to get one back late in the game when Sudbury again failed to deal with a ball put through the defence.

The match finished AFC Sudbury Ladies 7 – 3 Bungay Town Ladies. Sudbury now go through to the second round of the cup where they hope to go one better than last year when they went out in the second round.

The Ladies have no match next week but will be back on Sunday 31st October where they recommence their league campaign against Brantham Athletic Ladies. Kick off is at 2pm at Delphi.
