Our 1st game of the season away to last seasons champions, always a good game with a well organised Braintree Town team.
The effort in the warm up from the players was less than required at this level, mental preparation seemed low and the players were asked to start with a high tempo and get some early goal, put them on there back foot straight away - we were still in the changing room for 10 mins, as Braintree punished some indecision twice in 3 minutes, good finishes by Braintree! 2-0 down, we settled & started to play a lot better & dominated until the half time whistle with a penalty goal as reward for the efforts scored by Jack James - HT 2-1.
Three changes at halftime brought some fresh approach and we struck back to draw level with a clever curled chip from Ben Harris who was looking dangerous all day. This was nothing less than they deserved 2-2.
Then passed 20 minutes of good possession with 3 further good chances that were missed or saved, a weak back pass gave Braintree another goal & some heads did drop. Another indecisive passage of play led to another Braintree gifted goal 4-2. Two further good chances missed & Braintree scored a good 5th but this again was avoidable, result 5-2, a flattering score line not in line with the game.
Definitely opportunities for improvements highlighted & definite positives with chances created & the whole team not givIng up right to the end, if we'd started that way a different result I'm sure. Ben Harris was dangerous throughout with Tye Hipkin & Mackenzie Ratcliffe working very hard - MOM went to Josh Wells for his continuous battling and physical presence throughout.
We move onto next week with development areas identified in the cup against Braintree again.
