Three More Points As AFC Climb

Fifth Straight Victory

A midweek trip to Julius Martin Lane and a victorious one that saw AFC climb four places up the table and make it five straight victories, four under Caretaker Manager Danny Laws.

It was a game that will certainly not live long in the memory, but an all important win for Sudbury. Laws kept the same team as Saturday with a couple of changes on the bench.

The early part of the game saw Adam Mills showing up well on the left side and attacking with vigour. There were plenty of long balls from both sides with some great passing ones out of defence by Tyler French.

Paul Walker in the AFC goal did well to save low down from Joe Garden before the home side were behind on twenty three minutes. Louis Blake up front was fouled some twenty-five yards out, and from the resultant free kick Adam Mills blasted the ball home giving Pope in the home goal no chance.

Some ten minutes later and the Suffolk side were two goals up. Another free kick, the game was littered with them, the ball fell to Louis Blake close to the goal line and somehow the lanky striker got his foot to it and it went up and over Pope into the back of the net.

Soham had a couple of wasteful opportunities in the final minutes of the half, Garden firing a free kick into Walker’s arms and both Hobbs and Clayton shooting over. One final chnace for AFC to increase there lead fell to Blake but he failed to get his head on a Dave Cowley cross.

The second half of the game was certainly not one of pretty football with the ball spending much of the time in the air. Soham ceratinly came out full of energy and pushed AFC back in an attempt to get back in the game, however the Sudury back line coped admirably and did what was needed and if lines needed to be cleared they were.

Blake who had been fouled a number of times left the frey to be replaced by Mekhi McKenzie up front and the young man did well when in control of the ball. Pope in the home goal pulled off a good save to deny AFC, while at the other end Walker tipped over a header from Clayton.

Ollie Peters took the place of Cowley leaving McKenzie alone up front as AFC defended their lead manfully and in reality never looked likely to surrender it.

The final whistle went and three points in the bag and another clean sheet and up to thirteenth place in the table, and a good way to set off later in the week for the FA Cup tie with Truro City.
