AFC Manager Speaks Before The Bury Game

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to today’s Bostik North Division fixture. Can I also welcome the players, management, committee and supporters of Bury Town.

Ben Chennery’s team are having a mixed bag season, on their day they are clearly a top team at this level but at times I’m sure Ben has been very frustrated. However as with all local derbies form goes out the window and I’m expecting a tight game but one that will be exciting I’m sure.

I have been in the Sudbury ‘hot seat’ now for a little under three months and I feel it is a good time to review how that has gone.

Firstly I am acutely aware that some of the decisions on players I have made have not been welcomed. Everyone has their opinions and I respect those of our supporters but I was brought into this club to point the first team into the right direction and I can say that I will do it my way. I have experience in building teams and that has been entrusted to me here and it is one that I relish.

I have heard moans and groans from the small collection of our very negative followers about players and performances. Firstly I describe those not as supporters because real supporters back the team through thick and thin. I have heard some of our players booed and I think it’s a disgrace. There are no players in my building who go out on the pitch to deliberately have a bad game so if they are struggling then they need lifting not slating.

I really feel that it would have been madness not to have looked closely at the outstanding footballing ability we have within the Academy. That is something I have done and will continue to do throughout this season and going forward. These are our lads, they are a part of the fabric of the club and being that dedicated is a great place to start.

It is true that we have had inconsistent performances as players develop the stamina and get up to speed at this level and that is normal. Am I concerned? No not in the slightest because this is a key part of the building process that I am working on.

The days of throwing good money after journeymen non league footballers are gone as I build a team with the right attitude, the right abilities and the right age, I know we will have an exciting future.

That will be done in the right way and it will be done so it is sustainable and that will not happen overnight. What I do know is putting in the sort of performance that we did in the first half of the Bowers and Pitsea match means we are not far away and I would ask that all involved support what we are doing, I believe it’s going to be worthwhile.

Enjoy the game
