There was no change at the top of after Tuesday evening’s fixtures, the leading pair Leiston and Enfield Town, both won.

Leiston remain two points ahead thanks to a third-minute goal by Gareth Heath (ex-AFC Sudbury) which earned them a 1-0 win at Thamesmead.

Enfield maintained their 100 per cent league record at their new stadium with a 3-0 victory over Chatham and they are now 12 points clear of third-placed Needham Market.

Kes Metitiri turned a Leon Osei cross into his own net on the half-hour for the only goal of the first half. A fizzer from Rudi Hall made it 2-0 on 67 minutes and, after Osei had hit a post with a late penalty, Dean Pennant completed the scoring in the final minute.

Harlow stay in fourth place, missing the chance to climb above Needham by forfeiting a lead and going down 2-1 at Redbridge, who moved up one place to ninth and kept themselves very much in the play-off hunt.

Danny Brown’s 19th-minute penalty put Hawks in front but Motormen hit back through Lewis Dark in the 33rd minute and Vinnie Durrant six minutes later.

The big game at the bottom brought joy for Great Wakering, whose 2-0 victory at Ware ended a run of 17 league games without a win. Jack Carlile put them ahead with an 18th-minute penalty and Billy Johnson added another two minutes after the interval.

Wakering are now three points ahead of bottom club Ilford and trail Ware only on goal difference. If they survive it will be largely because they have taken ten of the possible 12 points from their games against their fellow-strugglers.

Soham must be grateful for the six points that separate them from the relegation zone after their 5-2 defeat at Waltham Abbey. The league’s only Cambridgeshire side have taken only one point from six games this year and have conceded 13 goals in their last three matches.

It was much closer than the final score suggests, however. Daran Bern, Tom Laxton and Ayrton Coley fired the Abbotts into a 3-0 lead by the 41st minute but goals either side of the break by Andy Furnell and Dan Cotton pulled it back to 3-2 two minutes into the second half.

It was not until Bern netted his second in the 89th minute that Abbotts made sure of victory, and there was time for Liam Farrell to complete the nap hand.
