February 16, 2012 No Pressure On Swifts

Heybridge Swifts’ players have been told that the success of their season depends on the outcome of their next three or four games in the Ryman League Division One North.

The Swifts are still on the fringes of the play-off places and currently sit in 11th place just six points off and coach Barry Lakin and manager Mark Hawkes know that mathematically they can still be involved come the end of April.

“We’re still in with a chance and there’s no pressure on us or our players as there are with the big-spending clubs also chasing promotion,” said Lakin.

“I think we’re doing remarkably well with the resources we have and the players have shown their loyalty for the club by staying while some of them could have moved to other clubs for more money.

“The players want to keep the season alive right to the end and if we can keep picking up points in these next few games then we can stay in the mix.”

Like most of the local football clubs, Swifts have had two blank weekends because of the weather and it’s been hard for them to find somewhere to train and keep fit.

“We’re grateful that for the last two Thursdays the Ironworks Gym in Maldon, have allowed free access so the players can try and stay fit and also keep the team spirit going and we’re grateful for that.

“We’ll be having a really good session on the pitch tonight (Thursday) which will be the first time for more than two weeks.”
